about the brewery

Hirakou Shuzou

Hirakou Shuzou, established in 1861 in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, is a historic sake brewery renowned for its flagship brand, Hitakami. Situated in a prominent fishing port at the mouth of the Kitakami River, the brewery emphasizes crafting sake that complements seafood, reflecting the region's rich maritime heritage. After the devastation of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, Hirakou Shuzou rebuilt its facilities with modern stainless-steel equipment and embraced a new generation of local brewers, blending traditional Nanbu Toji techniques with contemporary practices. Their commitment to quality and community has solidified their reputation as a cornerstone of Miyagi's sake culture.
